Family
Irving Leddy was born in Argos, Marshall, Indiana on July 25th, 1921. He was born to Jeannette M. Rolkosky (1898- 1973) and John S. Leddy (1871-1932). He had an older sister named Hilda.
The Leddy family lived in Dowagiac, Cass, Michigan by 1930. At this time, the Leddy family consisted of four members: John, Jeannette, Hilda (1920- ), and Irving Leddy. Jeannette and John would have three children, however one of them would die. It is unknown how.
In 1920, the family began an 11,000-mile trek across the nation that covered 21 states, ending in April 1927 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where they put in the county jail. They travelled by foot and wheelbarrow, as well as hitchhiking occasionally. They would spend the night at the nearest place they could, often meaning farmhouses. The night they were found by the police, they had been caught in a rainstorm, and it was reported that there was not enough care being given to the Irving and Hilda.
His father, John, was born in Michigan on May 21th, 1871. In 1920, he was injured in a fall that prompted him to take the family on the 11,000-mile journey. John Leddy died in Dowagiac, Cass, Michigan at the age of 60 on January 28, 1932.
His mother was born in Alabama in 1897, as Jeannette M. Flowers. Jeannette’s parents both came from Alabama. Jeannette did not work; instead she was the family’s homemaker. She remarried to Jim Rolkosky (1868-1957) on March 18th, 1933 in Biloxi after the death of her first husband. At the time of Irving’s death, Jeannette would still be living in Biloxi.
Hilda Rose Leddy was born in Florida. Hilda would join the Rolkosky family with her mother.
Jim Rolkosky was born on August 4th, 1868, in Menominee, Michigan, and he would die on August 9th, 1957, in Biloxi Mississippi, at the age of 89. He was formerly married to Mary Rolkosky, who died in 1931. Jim had two sons and two daughters, as well as 18 grandchildren.
By 1940, there would be a fourth member of the Rolkosky household: Wifford Berry. Wifford Berry was the grandson of Jim Rolkosky. He worked as a labourer in Biloxi.
